Join the Fight to Stop a Prison on the
New River

The New River, the oldest and one of our nation’s most wild and scenic rivers is under attack again. This time by a proposed 1,024 prison project. This project will threaten not only the river, but also thousands of acres of land that are already protected or will be protected from future development. This is the same area that was saved from a proposed hydroelectric dam over 30 years ago.

Help Us Protect The New River (Again)

The Cox’s Chapel Grange is opposed to locating a prison on Grayson County’s most valuable natural resource, the New River. We are leading the effort to protect the New River by encouraging local and state elected officials and the Virginia Department of Corrections to find another site. We support efforts to bring jobs to Grayson County, but not by building a prison on the New River. There are other sites.

Why the Proposed New River Site is Not Suitable For A Prison

This site is surrounded by land that is protected by conservation easements. Over the last decade a group of private individuals has been investing their own money to purchase land along the New River in an effort to protect it for future generations. These individuals have established Conservation Easements to protect the land and the river. The proposed prison site the private developers have selected is surrounded by land that is already or will soon be protected by conservation easements. This area is also the gateway to the Virginia Blueway, an effort to protect Virginia's most valuable natural resources from development.

Commemorative Poster

To commemorate everyone's efforts and support in preserving the New River and to raise a little more money to cover expenses, for a donation of $25 (or more) we will send you a commerative poster.

The illustration is a watercolor with the quotation: The song of the river ends not at her banks but in the hearts of those who have loved her. This is a limited edition print.

Donations can be made through the "donate" link with all proceeds going to Cox's Chapel Grange.

Update from April 17th

The Cox's Chapel Committee to Protect the New River had a very large delegation to attend the Department of Correction's Public Information Meeting on Tuesday, April 17th.

We had a chance to speak directly with the DOC Director, the Deputy Secretary of Public Safety and a multitude of DOC representatives. Everyone commented on our understanding of the issue, the thoughtfulness of our questions and the tenacity of those who have written, called and participated in our effort over the last 6 months. They were very pleased with our interest and comments.

While not confirmed yet, the primary discussion at the meeting was on the Route 58 Site as the developer's preferred site. There still remains some analysis to be completed on the site prior to a final decision. That decision is expected the first of May.

Folks attending the public meeting gathered a substantial amount of information from the representatives who were there. As soon as possible, we will summarize the information and post it to the web site.

Thanks to everyone across Virginia and North Carolina and throughout the country who continues to work so hard for the river. Literally thousands have been part of this effort. We still have a way to go, but once again we have crossed a major hurdle thanks to your efforts.

Virginia Taxpayers Will Pay Millions to Put a Prison on the New River

If this site is approved by the State, Virginia taxpayers will pay millions of dollars to build and widen roads, build a bridge across the New River and to provide water and waste/sewer treatment services to the prison. There are other sites that will not cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

Corrections asking them to find another site

Damage The Future of This Area’s Recreational and Tourism Industry

A prison on this site will damage the area’s growing recreational and tourism industry that has the potential to provide far more local jobs then the prison. Hikers, campers, and river enthusiasts from throughout the East Coast are beginning to discover the beauty of the New River and Grayson County. A prison on the New will threaten this growing source of jobs far more than the employment a prison will provide.

We Need Your Help to Protect the New River

Once before, the new river was threatened by a huge hydro-electric dam project that would have robbed powerful private developers thought that they could rob this community and our nation of one of its most valuable resources, the New River. The people of Virginia, North Carolina and across the country banded together to protect this majestic and beautiful river. By writing letters, making phone calls, staging protests and making financial contributions, thousands of people fought back and saved the river. We need your help to do it again. Please help now.
